Girls on the Run
At the September 2018 meeting of 100 Women Who Care Boston, Girls on the Run was selected to receive our donation of over $4,000. Elizabeth and Carolyn gave us an introduction to the infectious spirit of Girls on the Run during their nomination presentation. But after visiting the Girls on the Run Greater Boston office, we can only imagine the wonderful experience for young girls participating in the program. Four smiling faces greeted us as we entered into the brightly teal green painted office. The mission that drives them front and center on the wall. An overall sense of energy and excitement filled the air.
The Greater Boston chapter serves young girls in grades 3-8 across Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk counties. Fueled by the volunteer coaches and staff. The 10 week programs goes beyond the basics of running. The coaches serve as mentors and cheerleaders for each girl teaching life skills that go beyond the track. In a recent study of participants they found that 85% improved in confidence, caring, character or connections to others.
At the end of the 10 weeks the participants, coaches and volunteers come together in a celebratory 5k.
